Aleris will be shutting down its Lewisport mill for at least two weeks beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday. The mill has been open since April 20 after a previous temporary shutdown.
Employees were notified Tuesday morning. Owensboro Times made multiple attempts to reach Aleris for comment regarding the shutdown, but they did not provide one.
The Lewisport Mill previously closed for three weeks (March 30-April 19) in response to their major automotive customers announcing temporary production shutdowns, coupled with uncertainty in other markets. That closure was originally scheduled to last just two weeks, but it was extended as an adjustment to demand.
That is expected to be the same reason for temporarily shutting down again.
The Lewisport mill is currently for sale following the completion Novelis purchased Aleris last month.
Novelis announced last month that it acquired 13 Aleris plants across North America, Europe and Asia — but the company was required to divest some of Aleris’ assets to satisfy the Department of Justice regulations. So, the Lewisport mill and a plant in Belgium are being sold to a third party.
The Lewisport mill is currently operating as an individual identity and is still called Aleris until it is sold to another buyer.
