The Kentucky High School Speech League completed its virtual Senior High School State Speech Tournament last week with an awards ceremony video streamed on YouTube.

Students competed in 14 speech events as a culmination of the year’s competitive high school speech season in a state tournament rescheduled from March, when the in-person meet was postponed. This was KHSSL’s first online event and also served to mark its 100th year of state competitions.

Daviess County High School sent six entries to the tournament and advanced three to semifinals. The duo interpretation team of seniors Jada Prater and Kaytlyn Meyer advanced to semifinals. Freshman Beth Newcomb advanced to semifinals in informative speaking. Meyer advanced from storytelling semifinals into finals and captured sixth place overall in the event. Also competing for DCHS were Emily Kedenburg and Hanna Forrest.

State champions were crowned in each event after students participated in three preliminary rounds, a semifinal round, and the finals for the top six.
