Cars were lined up to the street Friday in front of Meadow Lands Elementary School as students waited to get sack lunches and new bicycle helmets.

MLES principal Kevin Lowe said he had never seen so many cars show up at a feeding site like that before.

“They went fast,” Lowe said. “It was exciting and crazy. It was great to know that students will have some protection as well throughout the summer. It’s going to be a long summer for them.”

Owensboro Health teamed up with the Daviess County Public Schools district to encourage bicycle safety for kids this summer.

OH donated 252 bicycle helmets to DCPS, which was distributed at Meadow Lands, Burns and Sorgho elementary schools. These three schools were chosen because they are the central hubs of the DCPS feeding sites.

Helmets were organized by size and approximate age groups so parents could select the helmets most likely to fit their children to adhere to physical distancing restrictions and other precautions.
