The driver’s license office will reopen to the public June 1, but with several stipulations including calling ahead to schedule appointments and wearing face masks in the building.

The driver’s license division will schedule appointments for those needing vehicle and motorcycle permits, as well as for anybody with a license that has been expired for over a year. These openings will be available on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Circuit Court Clerk Jennifer Hardesty Besecker said the first permit test will take place at 8 a.m. and the last one at 3 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On Wednesday, the office will schedule appointments for anyone that needs to do CDL testing.

“We are allowing CDL tests from 8-12 because sometimes people starting out with a CDL license, if they’re taking the general exam, it can take up to an hour,” Besecker said.

Besecker said the office will take two individuals every 30 minutes for written testing procedures.

“We have to allow time for cleaning, or in case we need to make a call to Frankfort,” she said. “The way we used to run our office is gone — it’s nonexistent.”

From Monday to Wednesday, only Daviess County residents will be permitted to take the written tests and schedule appointments.

Residents from Hancock, McLean and Ohio Counties should contact their local Circuit Court Clerk for information regarding permits and licenses.

Besecker said they are scheduling appointments on Thursdays and Fridays for priority cases, such as those who’ve moved to the area from out-of-state locations or need their license renewed in order to have their utilities turned on.

“If your license expires in July, that’s not a priority,” she said. “If your license expired between March 1-June 30, that would be a priority.”

Besecker also said a scheduler would soon be made available through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Residents of Daviess County will be able to go online and schedule times to renew their licenses, change their address or get an identification card, though they will not be able to schedule permit testing through the scheduler.

Individuals who need a priority duplicate license or a renewal can fill out a form via the website and either print it out and mail it or email it to [email protected]. Those who use credit cards will be charged $2.25.

“The goal is to process those as we get them,” Hardesty Besecker said. “After we process them, we’ll mail [the IDs out].”

For those who don’t have internet access, they can call the office and a form can be mailed out or a form can be picked up from the office. IDs can be mailed out af, but residents must call the office before showing up. If a person shows up who isn’t on the books, they can’t be helped. Residents must also wear a face mask anytime they show up to the office in person.

Though appointments for next week are likely already filled, callers may be able to schedule appointments for the following week at this time.

“We are on a 50/50 schedule, so we ask that you please be patient,” she said. “This is different than what you’re used to. It’s a trial-and-error process, and we’re jumping in feet first. We’re paving the way for the new normal. This is just how it’s going to be.”
