The Owensboro Kiwanis Club’s annual Walk of Honor will kickstart this week, and proceeds will be donated to the Green River Area Development District COVID-19 Response Fund.

American flags will be placed six apart on the lawn of Daviess County Courthouse beginning Thursday and until July 8. The flag sponsorship event is meant to honor anyone who has made a profound impact on the public or an individual as well as put patriotism on display.

These include everyone from first responders to friends and family members, public servants to healthcare workers, and religious figures to teachers.

Kiwanis is an international service club that supports nonprofit agencies and youths. This year’s events will have a focus on those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re not keeping any of the proceeds this year, so we’re doing it essentially for the community and for the COVID-19 response for our area,” said Steve McFarling, co-chairman of the Walk of Honor.

McFarling said it has been a challenge for the Kiwanis Club to promote the event because of COVID-19. He said only about half of the 120 flags have received sponsorship, which is well below what the club normally sees.

The Walk of Honor gives people a reason to get out of the house for a charity cause, McFarling said. The names of the sponsor and honoree will be written on a laminated card and placed on the flag pool.

“It’s amazing when you walk around (and see) the people that are honored that you really haven’t thought of in a while,” he said. “You see their name there and usually they’re family that’s honoring them, and that’s kind of a cool deal.”

It costs $40 to rent a flag. Call McFarling at 270-929-4127 to register.
