Businesses will be able to increase their capacity from 33% to 50% in roughly two weeks, as announced Tuesday by Gov. Andy Beshear.

He said restaurants, retail stores and others that have been operating for a month under the new guidelines can bump up the number of customers they can allow at once.

That means retail businesses can increase capacity as soon as June 20; restaurants on June 22; barber shops and salons on June 25; and fitness centers on July 1.

Businesses that delayed their openings will have to operate for a month before they can increase capacity.

“That means that we have gotten the practices in,” Beshear said of the one-month period. “They are becoming a part of what we are doing, and that will be the next phase we will be able to move towards.”

Bars across the state are expected to be able to reopen on June 29, the same day groups of 50 people or less can gather in public again.

Beshear announced 245 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the state total to 11,708. He also reported five new deaths, raising the total to 477 Kentuckians lost to the virus. At least 3,365 Kentuckians have recovered from the virus.
