Changes are coming to the former YMCA Athenian branch, but they won’t be unveiled until July.

The building located at 650 Chuck Gray Court was sold last month to locally owned Thekla’s Rentals, LLC.

Thekla’s Rentals is registered to Antonis Panayi, who owns numerous businesses in town including Owensboro Warehouse Leasing, LLC and PGP Exotic Auto Sales, Inc.

Panayi said he’ll have a more definitive answer in July on what the future holds for the former YMCA location, noting that he’d like to be “the proud owner of the building.”

“I don’t have a plan right now,” Panayi said. “We’re just remodeling.”

That includes work on the roof and building interior.

The Owensboro Family YMCA board of directors made the decision to permanently close the Athenian branch in December 2019 as a cost-cutting measure.

John Alexander, YMCA president and CEO, said they had been renting the building from a separate nonprofit organization that owned it.

The YMCA has since consolidated its operations at 900 Kentucky Pkwy.
