The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum has named Dan Miller editor of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine.

First published in 1966 by Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame member Pete Kuykendall, Bluegrass Unlimited was recently acquired by the Hall of Fame with plans to integrate the magazine into operations in Owensboro.

Miller will oversee the editorial content of the magazine and work with Hall of Fame Executive Director Chris Joslin and his staff to expand the audience for the print publication.

As publisher of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine through 2016, Miller is no stranger to the bluegrass music genre and possesses the skills and experience to have an immediate impact on Bluegrass Unlimited.

“I have known Dan Miller for several years and remain impressed with what he accomplished with Flatpicking Guitar Magazine,” Joslin said. “Dan is very passionate about the music and the community of bluegrass, and he knows how to speak to our audience in compelling ways. Bottom line, he has a proven track record of success, and that is important to me.”

The first issue of Bluegrass Unlimited published under the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum banner is expected in November. As editor, Miller will hit the ground running establishing the editorial calendar, working with columnist and other writers, providing input to the design and layout team, and supporting sales efforts.

“I started avidly reading Bluegrass Unlimited years ago and still have every one of my back issues,” Miller said. “It is a great honor to be offered this position, and I thank Chris Joslin and the Hall of Fame for this opportunity. Pete Kuykendall and his staff did an outstanding job with this publication, and I feel fortunate to have known Pete and admire the time and effort he put towards promoting the music that he dearly loved. Bluegrass music would not be where it is today without him. My goal is to continue that work and grow the audience for both the magazine and bluegrass music.”

Transition of the magazine will be seamless for current subscribers, but readers can expect enhanced design and layout elements beginning with the November issue. The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is working with Owensboro-based design firm Tanner+West for production and sales support for the monthly publication.

“We have worked on several projects with Tanner+West, and their capability and creativity is impressive,” Joslin said. “They have proven success in several key areas that will serve us well as we work to grow the audience for Bluegrass Unlimited. As we lead this effort, Tanner+West will be an important business partner.”

Jason Tanner of Tanner+West commented, “It’s an honor to be a part of the team with the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum producing this long-running magazine. Our publishing division, Tanner Publishing, has been producing magazines for almost a decade in Western Kentucky. We believe in the power of print and look forward to enhancing what’s already a tremendous publication.  Subscribers can look forward to new and exciting content but we’re keeping a lot of what readers love and expect from this title.”

The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum was established in 1991 and moved into a new 50,000 square-foot building in downtown Owensboro in late 2018, sparking a season of tremendous growth. In addition to producing ROMP Festival each June, the Hall of Fame incorporates two floors of interactive exhibits, the Katherine E. and Peter V. Kuykendall Research Library, a 450-seat performance theater, permanent outdoor stage, education facilities, private event space, museum store, and more making Owensboro, KY a worldwide destination for bluegrass music fans and artists.

“The work of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is intended to inspire current and future generations of bluegrass artists and fans to engage with the music,” Joslin said. “Bluegrass Unlimited is one of the important tools we will use to encourage that engagement. Bluegrass music has a permanent address at 311 West 2nd Street, Owensboro, KY, and we are excited to welcome Bluegrass Unlimited to its new home.”
