The H.L. Neblett Community Center will host a virtual forum for City Commission candidates this evening. The event will feature at least 13 of the 16 candidates vying for four City Commission seats.

Even though the Neblett Center has been closed to the public for some time because of COVID-19, Director Olga McKissic said it was important that her facility continue supporting the community in any way possible.

“This is a service we can still provide to the community, even though the facility is closed to the public,” she said. “I think it’s important that we continue to be there for others as an access point.”

Members of the community were able to send in questions for City Commission candidates to the Neblett Center ahead of time.

Owensboro Community & Technical College Associate Dean of Students Ade Oredein will serve as the moderator for Thursday’s event. So far, 13 candidates have signed up to attend.

With such a high number of candidates running for election, McKissic said the number of questions asked will largely depend on how much time it takes for each candidate to answer. Regardless of time constraints, each candidate will be given a chance to present their platform and ideas for the City of Owensboro.

“Each candidate has three minutes to expound on their platform and why they’re running,” McKissic added.

McKissic said the event should be over by the time the Presidential debate is scheduled to start.

“I just think it’s important that the citizens of Owensboro take these opportunities to address candidates who will possibly be our City Commissioners,” McKissic said. “To make informed decisions, you have to be informed.”

Those wishing to watch the H.L. Neblett Center’s City Commission forum must download the Zoom app to virtually attend. It is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. A direct link to the meeting can be accessed by clicking here
