A 14-year-old male was charged Wednesday with first-degree criminal mischief for the hate-based vandalism of the mural at Kendall Perkins Park, according to the Owensboro Police Department.

The mural meant to celebrate unity and the Black community was vandalized with racist messages and symbols the morning of Jan. 6.

The Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, led by chairperson Rafe Buckner, began a collaboration with Aaron Kizer last year to create a timeline of African art meant to celebrate unity and the Black community.

Kizer completed two images prior to the end of 2020. The suspect spray painted racist messages and symbols on at least two of those.
