For the past 20 years, Pam Smith-Wright has been holding the Freedom Walk in Owensboro. With this being the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Smith-Wright is inviting people to join this year’s walk starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and going from Fire Station No. 1 to the Daviess County Courthouse.

Smith-Wright said the original walk was created because she wanted to recognize the work of first responders in Owensboro and nationwide that lost their lives that day.

This year’s walk will conclude at the monument dedicated in honor of the first responders.

This year’s walk will also include ROTC guards and color guard members from local high schools. Smith-Wright expects 100 children to participate in the walk.

“[In the past,] we have had as many as 100 people [walk]. And we have had as few as 20, but it doesn’t matter. If we only have 10, we’re still going to do it,” Smith-Wright said.

The walk will be roughly 15 minutes long. Smith-Wright said all are asked to wear a mask.

Daviess County Judge-Executive Al Mattingly will be speaking at the courthouse and is expected to take 10 to 15 minutes altogether.
