After a weekend full of homecoming activities, Kentucky Wesleyan College announced that they will be removing the mask mandate put in place in August.

The decision comes after reaching vaccination rates of 79% among the student body and 92% among faculty and staff.

In August, KWC President Dr. Tom Mitzel mandated masks be worn by everyone in buildings on campus but said at the time that once the student body vaccination rate reached 80% they would reconsider.

“It is recommended that you wear your mask when physical distancing is not possible, and that you wear a mask at all times indoors if you are not vaccinated,” Mitzel said. “The wearing of masks, however, will no longer be mandated by the college.”

Mitzel said that the faculty will have the option to recommend masks for students inside their classrooms.

As of Sept. 30, the College’s COVID-19 dashboard is reporting 549 students are vaccinated. There are four active cases, all among students. Three of the cases are unvaccinated students. They also have eight people in quarantine/isolating from close contacts, all unvaccinated.
