Fourth Street Baptist Church is kicking off their Advent season and encourages community-wide involvement with their Hanging of the Greens event this Saturday.

Hanging of the Greens is an event where churches decorate the building with Christmas or Advent decor to usher in the birth of Jesus Christ. Some of the decorations include evergreens to represent eternal life.

Minister Glen Calhoun said the event at 6 p.m. Saturday is the first time they are opening the annual event to community collaboration.

“We normally have it at the church, like a small scale just within the church service. But that will be in a standalone for a separate service on Sunday morning. So yeah, we’re looking forward to it,” Calhoun said.

The event will include a dance team performance, a quartet with members from First Christian and Third Baptist Churches, a praise team performance, and other things to add to the celebration. In addition, some other churches from Evansville and Henderson were invited to participate.

Calhoun said he also reached out to the Mass Community Choir and other churches to hopefully make it an annual event.

The idea to bring the event to Fourth Street Baptist Church started after attending a similar service at Walnut Memorial Church a few years back. Since then, Fourth Street Baptist has enjoyed putting on their own version.

“I don’t know where the Lord’s gonna take it in future things but right now with all the bad things going on in the community, it’s just good to have something good going on in your community,” he said.
