The City of Owensboro recently approved the acquisition of two Cedar Street homes, with the properties to be used for the eventual renovation and expansion of Owensboro Fire Department Station 1.

City Manager Nate Pagan said the two properties cost a combined $235,000, and the north portion of that block is now entirely owned by the City.

Fire Station 1 serves a dual purpose as a service station and headquarters for OFD administration, so officials are looking to renovate and expand the facility to better encompass both functions.

“These acquisitions will provide much-needed space to build a modern and appropriately sized headquarters and station in a couple of years,” Pagan said.

Pagan stated that the money used to purchase 915 and 917 Cedar Street was included in a budget amendment during a previous City Commission meeting.

The future project is part of Operation Firehouse. The operation began with the renovation of Fire Station 2 last summer, and this year involves renovations to Station 3 on Cravens Avenue and the new Fire Training Center on 14th Street.

Pagan said the renovation of Station 1 would begin after upgrades toStation 3 are complete, which is estimated to be in February 2025, according to a recent City Projects list.
