Owensboro Memorial Gardens is wanting to adorn over 1,700 graves with a wreath this holiday season as they prepare for another year of Wreaths Across America.

The annual program aims to lay wreaths over veterans throughout the nation to remember and honor them even after they’ve passed and then read them names at a ceremony on December 16.

“Our thing is, a hero dies twice. Once when they physically die and again once people stop saying their name. So it’s showing the community that their loved ones are not forgotten and that we honor their service,” County Clerk Leslie McCarty said.

So far, over 40 wreaths are sponsored. Last year, McCarty said they received over 300 wreaths sponsored and she wants to get closer to the 1,700 this year.

“We’ve got a lot to go, and last year we had about 300 and I definitely would like to get closer to the big number, but we’ll take whatever I can get,” McCarty said.

She said sponsoring a wreath places it on a random gravesite, however, donors can sponsor a specific wreath(s) if they choose to.

The cost of one wreath is $17 and they do offer pundles as well. McCarty said the deadline to purchase a wreath before the December 16 ceremony is November 28.
