It’s been nearly 18 months since Owensboro Times first reported that Sonic was planning a second location in Owensboro, and so far little has been done beyond leveling the lot. A spokesperson recently said the restaurant is still being planned but could not confirm a timeline for construction or estimated opening.
On September 28, a building permit was issued to Johnson Construction for the new Sonic, which will be located at 2510 West Parrish Avenue next to Taco Bell. According to the permit, the building will be 1,293 square feet and the construction cost is nearly $1.56 million.
OT broke the news of the new location in February 2022.
OT has checked in multiple times with the following responses from a Sonic spokesperson:
- June 29, 2022: “While we don’t have any specific details to offer currently, we plan to open the new Owensboro location in early 2023.”
- October 5, 2022: “The Owensboro location is still moving forward, with an anticipated opening in Spring 2023.”
- March 29, 2023: “The word is that this store plans to open towards the end of the year.”
- September 28, 2023: “I confirmed that the Owensboro Sonic is still being planned but we don’t have any specific timing updates to share right now.”
There is also currently a Sonic Drive-In located at 3107 Frederica St.
