Owensboro shut out their opponent on their Senior Night, while Owensboro Catholic dropped a heartbreaker at home.
Owensboro 8, Grayson County 0
In their 8-0 home shutout win over Grayson County, it was the seniors that shined on Senior Night, with Byaruhanga Mutabazi, Ryan Sovar, and Romer Payne combing for four goals and two assists.
“We played all 8 seniors almost the entire game. They were emotionally stable and didn’t let the moment get ahold of them,” Owensboro head coach Ryan Haley said. “We typically don’t play all 8 like we did tonight, so for all of them to be in the field together was something special.”
Junior Denis Juma (2 goals, 3 assists), freshman Peter Mbayu (1 goal, 1 assist), junior Connor Cundiff (1 goal), and junior Garrett Ferry (2 assists) rounded out the Red Devils scoring. Defensively, they held Grayson County to 1 shot.
“It was a very good defensive game tonight with Romer Payne leading the charge in the back line,” Hayley said. “In the offensive side of the ball, we finally got Denis Juma back from injury and he had a great game with multiple goals and assists. I thought we spread the ball around very well and finished on some very nice one-touch crosses. Overall, I am happy with the performance.”
Muhlenberg County 1, Owensboro Catholic 0
Playing on their home pitch, the Aces fell just short to Muhlenberg County 1-0. Goalie Ben Dawson recorded four saves, keeping his team in the game, but the offense was unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Owensboro Catholic had 14 shots, six of them on goal.
“I thought we did enough to win the game, but we didn’t take our chances,” Owensboro catholic head coach Andy Donohoe said. “We created four or five great opportunities. When you don’t take your chances, you always run the risk of losing the game. Credit to Muhlenberg County, they worked really hard and took their chance when it came. We had a good response going behind and kept pushing forward. It was another performance that had positive and other areas to work on.”
