Owensboro hosts Apollo in an anticipated City-County showdown that doubles as a district matchup. In other Friday night action, Owensboro Catholic, McLean County, Daviess County, and Hancock County are all hosting home games.
Apollo 3-2 (Class 5A, District 1)
@ Owensboro 2-3 (Class 5A, District 1)
Eagles QB Maxwell Johnson and Niles Board have the offense playing at a high level, and that will need to continue as they travel to Owensboro for an important matchup.
“We need to play as well as we can,” Apollo head coach John Edge said. “Their record doesn’t show what they can do. They played some strong teams to start the season, as did we.”
Owensboro is fresh off of what head coach Jay Fallin called their most complete game in a 42-7 blowout win over Graves County. Evan Hampton scored four touchdowns and he will be leaned on heavily tonight due to the expected rain.
“We are expecting a good game,” Fallin said. “Last year we didn’t play as well defensively against them. Maxwell Johnson is a good QB and they have talented receivers. He has a solid arm, is mobile, and does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield when he scrambles. Niles Board is very fast and talented. He’s lined up all over and they do creative things to get him the ball. They are a year older and better than last year.”
Due to the incoming inclement weather, both teams are expecting what could be a sloppy game and will focus on limiting as many mistakes as possible.
“It’s going to rain so turnovers and sloppiness by both teams will occur,” Edge said. “We can’t be the more sloppy team, and whoever can throw and run it in the rain will have the edge.”
Owensboro Catholic 5-0 (Class 2A, District 2)
vs. Crittenden County 2-2 (Class 2A, District 1)
Quick notes: For the second straight year, the Aces are off to a 5-0 start and coming off a 28-2 road route over Henderson County. Despite rolling his ankle, QB Brady Atwell scored four total touchdowns. Looking to improve to 6-0, Owensboro Catholic hosts Crittenden County whom they beat 62-12 last year.
Head Coach Jason Morris said: We’re expecting a rainy and nasty night with the hurricane coming in. Our focus will be on ball security and finishing tackles. Both teams want to spread the ball and then depending on the weather both teams might be throwing it more than usual.
Quinn Summers is a solid QB. He’s a new starter this year for them and you can tell it’s a system he’s grown up in. The coach makes sure they have solid QB play every year. Cameron Belcher and Caden Howard are both capable of scoring at any time. They play on both sides of the ball and are great athletes.
Last week we had some blown assignments on the offensive line and too many bad snaps. It hindered our offensive production. We need to get better at tackling.
Daviess County 0-5 (Class 6A, District 1)
vs. Warren Central 2-3 (Class 6A, District 2)
Quick notes: The Panthers had a chance to secure their first win of the season, but their comeback bid came up short against Meade County, turning it over on their last three drives. Jace Hunt caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown and will once again be leaned on to help jumpstart the offense. Tonight, they host Warren Central whom they beat last year 34-12.
Hancock County 5-0 (Class 3A, District 1)
vs. Trigg County 3-2 (Class 3A, District 1) Saturday game*
Quick notes: As time expired, QB Dylan Morris found Christian Yanez for a 30-yard walk-off touchdown to keep their undefeated season intact. Tomorrow, they host Trigg City whom they soundly beat last year 51-28.
McLean County 2-2 (Class 3A, District 1)
vs. Union County 3-2 (Class 3A, District 1) Saturday game*
Quick notes: The Cougars snapped their two-game losing streak with a 42-28 win over Todd County Central. Running back Aden Bolden rushed for 117 yards and also threw a touchdown pass. Tomorrow, they host Union County whom they lost to last year 42-30.
Head coach Zach Wagner said: We have to be able to move the ball, sustain drives, and score inside the red zone.
I think everyone knows that Jaren Johnson is the main cog in their offense. We need to continue to get better, limiting mistakes and mental errors. It was encouraging to see some of our young guys play well last week.
