The Owensboro Fire Department responded to two fires with no injuries Wednesday evening. According to an OFD official, an accidental fire broke out at a residence on 1st Street, while a fire was apparently set in the vacant facility that previously housed the juvenile day treatment facility on KY 54.

OFD Battalion Chief Steve Leonard said the fire at the former day treatment center is the second set in the last month.

“The property is owned by the State of Kentucky and is often occupied by homeless (individuals),” Leonard said. “This is an ongoing problem that we’re trying to resolve.”

He said OFD also responded to a fire in the 900 block of West 1st Street. Leonard said no one was home at the time of the fire, which caused damage to the kitchen area in the rear of the home. He said the incident appeared to be accidental.

Both fires are still under investigation.
