With the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office experiencing long lines Tuesday for in-person payment of property taxes, Sheriff Brad Youngman is reminding residents they can pay their tax bills online this year.

Tuesday marked the the first day the DCSO office was open to accept tax payments. Youngman said the wait time was about 20-30 minutes and there were no issues beyond having to stand in line.

“Tax season will run through the end of the year and into January and February,” Youngman said. “I would anticipate having an increased activity in lines the first few weeks, but after that, it tends to calm down.”

Youngman noted that one of his goals upon being elected was to allow citizens to pay their property taxes online.

“The main idea was I just wanted to be able to offer a variety of ways to pay to accommodate the public,” he said.

Bills can currently be viewed and paid on the DCSO website, dcsoky.gov, where users will find a link on the homepage directing them to the payment portal. Payments can be made using a credit card or electronic check, though processing fees may apply.

Paper tax bills were still mailed the first week of November, and each included a QR code to guide taxpayers to the online payment option if they choose to use it.

For those who prefer traditional methods, all previous payment options remain available. Residents can still pay in person with cash, check, money order, or credit cards (fees may apply for credit cards). Check and money order payments can also be sent by mail.

For citizens who received a tax bill even though their home is in escrow, Youngman said there’s no need to worry.

“That is simply because your escrow company did not contact our office before we printed the bills,” a statement posted by DCSO reads. “Your escrow company most likely still intends to pay your bill; they just didn’t tell us, so we had to send one to you.”

Anyone with concerns is encouraged to call their mortgage company, or check the status of their bill has been paid at DCSOKY.gov through the “pay property taxes” link.

The 2024 collection schedule for county residents’ tax bills is as follows:

  • November 10-December 10: 2% Discount
  • December 11-January 10: Base Amount
  • January 11-February 10: 5% Penalty
  • February 11-April 25: 21% Penalty

For questions, residents can also visit dcsoky.gov/tax-collection, call 270-685-6133, or email [email protected].
