Competing at yesterday’s Class 3A State Track and Field Meet, Daviess County’s boys team finished 33rd and the girls were 40th, Owensboro’s girls’ team was 27th. Finishing first on the girls’ side was Assumption, while Trinity (Louisville) won the boys competition.
Reaching the podium for Daviess County were the girls’ 4×800 relay team of Bella Coombs, Haley Wolfe, Mallory Raines, and Lucy Spaw (8th, 9:52.93) and Ryder Williams, who finished fifth in the long jump. Spaw also finished 11th in the girls’ 800, while the boys’ 4×800 relay team of Ben Nunley, Brody Holbrook, Nikolas Hodskins, and Austin Spurrier placed 14th.
“We started off the meet pretty well when our girls’ 4×800 relay team ran 18 seconds faster and placed,” Daviess County head coach Bob O’Brien said. “After that, we didn’t do exactly what we set out to do. Ryder Williams placed fifth in the long jump, and we were pretty happy with that. We have a young team and I am looking forward to next season. We had a pretty good year, but we’re looking for more next season.”
For the Lady Devils, the 4×100 relay team of Kimora Duncan, Karleigh Brown, Nakiyah Voyles, and Keeli Hanley finished sixth, while Voyles placed fifth in the girls’ high jump – both reaching the podium.
“I am extremely proud of how the Lady Devils performed today at the 3A State meet,” Owensboro girls’ head coach Matt Morris said. “Nakiyah Voyles finished fifth in the high jump, jumping 5′, and the ladies also took sixth overall in the 4×100 relay with a 49.96.”
Despite not having anyone reach the podium, Apollo held their own. Jamison Franey finished ninth in the high jump, while Emmit Brock was 11th in the 1600 and 18th in the 800. Noah Gray was 11th in the 3200 and Emhadjai Badger was 16th in the triple jump.
“It’s always great to have athletes qualify for the state track meet,” Apollo head coach Kris Crawford said. “Our region and state meet are one of the best, and the competition is amazing. I am beyond proud of our athletes, coaches, and this season. There were so many positives and great performances this season against some of the best. Our kids checked all the boxes and had some fun doing it and competing.”
