Despite only having four members, it was an impressive start to the wrestling season for Owensboro’s new look girls’ roster. Competing at the inaugural Russellville High School individual girls wrestling tournament over the weekend, Graycen Roberts finished first in her weight class, while newcomers Karma Grant and Flavia Sales Perez both finished 2-2.

“Graycen looked very strong in her season debut and has improved significantly, “Owensboro Head Coach Griffin Kelley said. “Her shots are cleaner, and she is much faster and efficient. We also had good showings from new members of our team Karma Grant and Flavia Sales Perez. It was a great showing for them in their first-ever meet.”

This weekend the boys team competed at the Henderson County Dual Tournament, finishing fifth out of 10 teams with a 4-2 record. Kameryis Cline and Adam Quintana Melton both finished 6-0 in their respective weight classes, while Isrell Roberts went 5-1.

“We started off slow, dropping the first two matches against South Warren and Henderson,” Kelley said. “We responded well and were able to win the remaining four matches of the day against John Hardin, Calloway County, and Bullitt Central. We also had some good showings from new members on the team. Overall, we still have a lot to clean up and work on, but it was a solid start to our season.”
