Even though the KHSAA Cheer State Competition was delayed a few weeks, Daviess County showed no signs of rust or nerves, taking home first place in Game Day Large with a score of 95.80. They also finished eighth in All Girls-Medium (78.15).
“Daviess County Cheer is something really special,” Daviess County Head Coach Kitty Jones said. “Our coaches show up every day with so much heart, knowledge, and dedication that makes all the difference. Our seniors have led by example all season. Their determination, grit, and commitment to getting better pushed this team to new levels.”
Owensboro placed eighth in Coed (56.00), a significant improvement from their regional performance.
“We finished eighth which moved us up five places from our regional score so we were happy with that,” Owensboro Head Coach Heather Cavitt said. “We performed well and were happy with it. Since we have three football players, it took us a bit longer to get here, but we have three weeks until nationals, so we are excited about our progress.”
Apollo was also in attendance, finishing 12th in Game Day Small with a score of 77.90.
Next up is nationals, which is broken up into multiple weekends due to the school size. Division II consists of schools with 1,399 or less students and Division I is any school with 1,400 or more. Apollo, Owensboro, and Owensboro Catholic will compete the weekend of January 29-31.
“We are excited about Catholic joining us this year,” Cavitt said. “We have been practicing together and supporting each other.”
Daviess County will perform the following weekend.
“This State Championship is a direct result of everyone buying in, working hard, and staying committed to winning,” Jones said. “I couldn’t be prouder of this team and this community.”
