A head-on collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of KY 81 and Park Drive sent multiple people to the hospital with serious injuries Thursday afternoon, officials say.

According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a report of an injury crash at approximately 5:09 p.m. in the Friendly Village area. Patrol deputies, the Daviess County Fire Department, the Moseleyville Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

An initial investigation indicates a pickup truck was exiting the Even Steven’s parking lot and attempting to travel south on KY 81 when it pulled into the path of a northbound passenger car traveling at highway speeds, according to DCSO. Authorities said the driver of the car attempted to avoid the collision by swerving, but the two vehicles collided head-on, causing severe damage to both.

DCSO said the driver of the pickup truck was treated at the scene by firefighters and EMS for minor injuries. The driver and a passenger in the car were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be mechanically extricated by firefighters. According to DCSO, both sustained multiple serious injuries, including broken bones, and were transported by AMR to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit. KY 81 was closed in both directions for approximately an hour and a half while the scene was cleared.
