From free admission to hands-on learning and a scavenger hunt, Checkmarks Family Fun Saturday will turn the Owensboro Museum of Science and History into a play-based learning hub this Saturday.

The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is open to families across the community, with free museum admission offered throughout the day.

Family Fun Saturday is designed to give young children and caregivers meaningful opportunities to learn through play. Hands-on activities will be hosted by community partners, including the Daviess County Public Library, Daviess County Cooperative Extension, Theatre Workshop of Owensboro, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

In addition to the activities, families can enjoy face painting, kid-friendly snacks, and free books while supplies last. Children will also be encouraged to explore the museum through a special scavenger hunt, with participating families entered for a chance to win free museum memberships.

“The museum is a wonderful place for families to visit any time of the year — full of opportunities to explore, ask questions, and discover together,” said Emmy Woosley, Checkmarks Program Coordinator. “Through Checkmarks, we are excited to welcome families  into this space and help them see how everyday moments of curiosity can support learning and  connection.”

Isaac Settle, executive director of the museum, said the event reflects the museum’s long-standing role in the community.

“Family Fun Saturday is all about celebrating the joy of learning together as a community,” Settle said. “Alongside our local partners, who bring so much creativity to the day, we are excited to welcome families to explore, create, and discover at the museum. Since 1966, the museum has served as a gathering place, a family-friendly attraction, and a hub for educational opportunities. That’s why we are thrilled to partner with Checkmarks to host this special event for the whole community.”

Checkmarks is an initiative of the Public Life Foundation that provides early childhood development resources to help children build skills for kindergarten and beyond. Community events like Family Fun Saturday are designed to connect families with local organizations and simple strategies that support early learning at home.
