On match days, if Kali Nichols doesn’t have her headphones, her day is ruined. A simple superstition, but the results speak for themselves. The Daviess County superstar is 34-0, leaving nothing but a path of bodies in her wake.
At the KHSAA Girls Region 1 Tournament in early February, Nichols blitzed her first three opponents, winning 18-1, 17-1, and 18-1, before flashing her meticulous side in the finals – a 3-0 win. A three-time Region 1 champion, Nichols has loftier expectations – a KHSAA State Championship title – a goal that just slipped through her fingers a year ago.
“I’m feeling pretty confident this year, and I am just hoping to win,” Nichols said. “I just have to make sure I don’t make any mistakes, and if I do, then I need to get back against them really quickly, so my opponent doesn’t get me off guard. I just need to end them quickly.”
Spurred on by her defeat in the 2025 State Championship finals, Nichols quickly got to work in the off-season with a focus on improving her cardio. Having taken her game to the next level, she started the 2026 season with a bang. It was during a Tournament at Taylor County early on in the season that she realized she was on another level.
“There are rankings at the beginning of the year, and there was this girl at the Taylor County Tournament ranked above me,” Nichols said. “I beat her in less than a minute, and then I knew I was doing pretty well this year. After that, I was feeling great.”
Last year marked the first time a wrestler from Daviess County has ever reached the finals, and a title on this Saturday would be the first in program history.
“The thought of it is pretty indescribable,” Daviess County Head Coach Colton Gonzalez said. “Owensboro as a whole has only had one State Champion, and there has not been a lot of history in Daviess County’s program.”
Nichols is joined this weekend by fellow Lady Panthers Kaylee Klee (145) and Mariya Meh (235). Weigh-ins are scheduled for 8:30 am later this morning, with the first round kicking off an hour later.
