The Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools has announced the return of its Readers to Leaders program for 2026, continuing a community-centered effort that connects students with local leaders through reading and conversation.
Readers to Leaders brings community professionals and civic leaders into elementary classrooms as guest readers. Volunteers read a story, talk with students about why reading matters in their own lives, and share insight into their careers, helping students see how literacy connects to future opportunities beyond school.
This year’s Readers to Leaders visits will take place Feb. 27 at Southern Oaks Elementary and March 4 at Audubon Elementary.
“Students light up when they see people from their own community walk into the classroom,” said Emmy Woosley, executive director of the Foundation for DCPS. “When a banker, lawyer, artist, or civic leader shares a story and talks about their job, students begin to understand that reading is not just a school skill, it is a life skill. We are so grateful for the leaders who take time to invest in our students.”
Guest readers may bring a favorite book or choose from a selection provided by the school.
“I love getting to spend a few minutes in the classroom with students,” said Ellen Ebelhar, a retirement plan service manager with Independence Bank. “Seeing their curiosity and hearing their questions is the best part, and it reminds us why supporting our schools matters.”
The program supports DCPS’s focus on developing the whole child by encouraging literacy, curiosity, and early career awareness. Foundation leaders say community involvement has proven to be a powerful motivator for young learners.
Community members interested in participating in future Readers to Leaders events are encouraged to contact the Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools to be added to its Community Reader list.
The Foundation for DCPS partners with the community to provide enhanced opportunities, resources, and experiences for students across the district, supporting student success through collaboration and shared investment.
