As Meade County’s shot fell short, the entire Owensboro Sportscenter arena held its collective breath. In seconds, Apollo was left heartbroken as Ayden Medley grabbed the rebound and quickly bounced it off the glass to beat the buzzer – securing a 48-46 win for the Green Waves and eliminating the Eagles from the 3rd Region Tournament.

“I thought our defense was really good tonight and really good throughout the tournament,” Apollo Head Coach Ryne Tinsley said. “We just didn’t make a few plays down the stretch to win the game, and we didn’t close it out. We shouldn’t have been in that situation, and we missed three of our last four free throws. It didn’t go the way it needed to go, but I think there is a purpose for everything.”

The first quarter was back and forth, as neither team could claw ahead and the two were tied 16-16 after the opening eight minutes. Carlos Cruz and Tate Powers combined for eight points, while Tre Haskins and Eli Williams both hit a three.

Medley, Jentzen Hayes, and Hayden Shouse led the way for Meade County, combining for 13 of their 16 points.

The second quarter was a defensive battle, with both sides scoring six points. Shouse (5) and Landon Henning (4) led the way for their respective teams.

Out of halftime, Apollo started to pull away behind a balanced attack that saw Haskins, Williams, Powers, Cruz, and Kayden Green combine for 10 points. On the defensive side of the ball, they consistently gave Meade County fits, holding them to five points.

Leading 32-25 entering the fourth quarter, Apollo pushed their lead to 39-29, but couldn’t put the game away.

“We missed some plays,” Tinsley said. “There were a few times we got to the rim, but couldn’t capitalize.”

After going scoreless in the third quarter, Shouse found his scoring touch down the stretch, exploding for nine of his game-high 18 points. Shouse’s domination on the inside opened up the perimeter for Meade County, splashing four threes.

The Green Wave cut Apollo’s lead to 41-40, but Williams and Henning both scored to make it 45-40. Undeterred, Meade County hit a pair of threes to take their first in over 10 minutes.

With less than 8.5 seconds left and trailing 46-45, Henning found himself at the line, tying the game after going 1-2 – leading to Medley’s heroics.

Henning led the Eagles with 11 points, Williams added nine points, and Cruz and Powers both scored eight points. For Meade County, Shouse led all scorers with 18 points, Medley added 11 points, and Pike scored nine points.

Despite the loss, Apollo finished the season 20-10, recording their first 20-win season in nine years. This was also the first time they won a 3rd Region Tournament game since 2018. The Eagles will return the majority of their roster next year, only losing Kayden Green to graduation.

“He had an unbelievable transformation,” Tinsley said. “Where he was as a middle school kid to a high school kid, and just as a person and a player. It is a completely different kid. …He bought into what we did, and now he has a scholarship to Brescia University and it has been incredible to see his development.”
