A new springtime event aimed at bringing families together is set to debut at The Cottage with its inaugural “Burgers & Barnyard Bash” on April 11 and 12.

The outdoor, picnic-style gathering will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at The Cottage, located at 6869 Highway 56 in Owensboro, across from the Sorgho Firehouse. Admission is free and open to the public.

Organizers said the event is designed to offer a relaxed, accessible outing for families during Spring Break, featuring fresh, locally sourced food and interactive activities for all ages.

Visitors can expect hand-pattied burgers made from Hillview Farms beef and grilled onsite, along with fries, tots, sweet treats, and drinks. The menu will include items such as The Owensburger and the Daviess Co. Double, which earned second place during Owensboro Burger Week.

Beyond the food, the event will include live music, mini golf, yard games, and a small barnyard featuring goats, chickens, and rabbits.

Owner Marlene Knight said the goal is to create a welcoming environment where the community can gather and enjoy simple moments together.

“We’re lucky to have such a beautiful space where families can come together and enjoy a simple picnic-style day,” said owner Marlene Knight. “Events like this are about bringing neighbors together, sharing great food made from local ingredients, and helping people discover what The Cottage is all about. We plan to host these several times a year to keep that connection going.”

She added the idea was also shaped by families staying local for Spring Break.

“Not everyone can go out of town for Spring Break so we wanted to create an event that is laid-back and easy to attend,” Knight said.

Organizers said the Burgers & Barnyard Bash also serves as a preview of The Cottage’s larger seasonal events, including the upcoming Strawberry Festival scheduled for June 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Vendor applications for that event are currently being accepted through The Cottage’s Facebook page.

The Cottage said it hopes to make the Burgers & Barnyard Bash a recurring event throughout the year as it continues to establish itself as a community gathering place focused on fresh, from-scratch cooking and local connections.
