Kentucky is launching a new statewide driver licensing system that officials say will modernize services, expand online options, and improve the customer experience. As part of the transition, all regional driver licensing offices across the state will close June 4-5 before reopening June 8 under the new system.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the upgraded system will replace Kentucky’s nearly 40-year-old driver licensing platform and introduce a new online portal called myDrive.
The portal, available beginning June 8 at mydrive.ky.gov, will allow users to pre-apply for licenses, permits, and IDs; request replacement cards; check license status; and access other services online.
“We’re excited to roll out new services to better serve Kentuckians and modernize how we do business for decades to come,” Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman said in a release.
Officials said residents are encouraged to create myDrive accounts once the portal launches, even if they do not currently need licensing services. Some users may need to verify their identity through a code sent by mail, and setting up an account early could help avoid delays later.
The state is also encouraging anyone scheduling a written or road test through the Kentucky State Police to pre-apply through myDrive before their appointment.
As part of the transition, several temporary service changes will take effect:
- All Driver Licensing Regional Offices will close June 4-5
- Offices will reopen June 8 with walk-in hours from 8 a.m. to noon through June 18
- Saturday office hours will be available May 30 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- The MyCDL portal for medical certificate uploads will be discontinued beginning June 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern
- Online driver’s license renewal services will be unavailable beginning June 3 and restored June 8
