What started as a way to honor a beloved family member has grown into a business that is introducing local shoppers to everything from oversized cinnamon rolls to custom sugar cookies.
Mucking Good Sweets, owned by Alyssa and Jessica Muckerheide, joined the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market this season and has quickly become known for its variety of baked goods and creative twists on classic favorites.
The business was established in 2024 following the loss of Alyssa Muckerheide’s aunt, who had long encouraged her passion for baking.
“Mucking Good Sweets began in the fall of 2024 after my aunt had passed away,” Muckerheide said. “She was always a supporter of my dreams, and I wanted to honor her through my baking.”
The business began with custom sugar cookies for friends and family before gradually expanding its menu as demand increased. In the spring of 2025, Muckerheide entered her first craft show and continued growing the business from there.
A special education teacher by profession, Muckerheide said baking provides a creative outlet outside of work.
Today, customers can find a variety of baked goods at the Mucking Good Sweets booth, including cinnamon rolls, cookies, seasonal breads, muffins, and decorated sugar cookies designed around holidays and special occasions. The business also accepts custom cookie orders for birthdays, weddings, and celebrations.
Muckerheide said one of the goals of the business is to balance nostalgia with creativity.
“Mucking Good Sweets is a blend of traditional with unexpected modern flavors,” she said. “I try to offer sweets that remind customers of a family recipe, something they had in their childhood, while also trying new combinations.”
That approach has helped make the business’s cinnamon rolls one of its most popular offerings.
“The cinnamon rolls have been a huge hit,” Muckerheide said. “We always include the original cinnamon roll flavor for the traditionalist, but we have recently introduced blueberry and strawberry flavors, which have been a hit.”
The newest addition to the lineup is a Bourbon Pecan cinnamon roll inspired by Kentucky flavors.
This year marks Mucking Good Sweets’ first season as a vendor at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market. Muckerheide said joining the market was encouraged by family members in the Owensboro area who had attended for years.
“My spouse’s family lives in Owensboro and the surrounding area and has been going to the market for years,” she said. “They suggested I join, and I thought it was a great idea.”
In addition to connecting with customers, the market has also given the family another reason to spend time together.
“Since living in Newburgh, we don’t get to see family like we would want to, and the market provides an opportunity for them to come see us and spend time together,” Muckerheide said.
She said one of her favorite aspects of the market has been the sense of community among vendors and shoppers alike.
“The market provides a sense of community and a welcoming atmosphere,” she said. “Everyone has been so nice and helpful. We’ve seen old friends and made new friends. It’s been really great.”
That community connection is one reason she believes local markets remain important.
“Everything is so generic now with big companies putting who knows what ingredients in their products, and the market allows for authenticity,” Muckerheide said. “We get to meet the people behind the products and support a community that also supports us.”
Looking ahead, Mucking Good Sweets plans to introduce peach cobbler at an upcoming market, with additional cobbler flavors planned throughout the season.
Muckerheide said she is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the market and the community that supports it.
“We are thankful to the market for allowing us to be a vendor and a part of the Owensboro community,” she said.
