Letter to the Editor

A phenomenal event took place in our community in March. It was an inspirational experience of drama, art, and music that deserves the accolades and attention of our community. This amazing performance of theatre was the production of “Mamma Mia” by our Daviess County High School students and staff.

Audiences usually come to high school performances with lower expectations. Their main desire is to support an adolescent family or friend in their pursuit rather than expect a stellar performance. Those who attended one of the four performances of “Mamma Mia” who had typical expectations were no doubt in for a surprise. The Mamma Mia show was anything but your typical high school musical. Our students and all those involved in creating this outstanding production exceeded all expectations someone could have for any theatre performance, no matter the age of the talent or size of the venue.

The excitement and energy before the show started was tangible. The passion and joy from the student actors were infectious. My 8-year-old daughter was on the edge of her seat for the entire show; her eyes were full of wonder and joy. The students’ voices were near perfect, their timing was impeccable, and their acting was convincing. I totally believed the young man who played Sam Carmichael was a middle-aged divorced man. The young lady who played Sophie was pitch-perfect. And the scene with Sophie and her mom Donna left every mother and daughter teary-eyed in the audience. There were so many notable performances from the talented young men who played Harry and Bill, to the brilliant young women who played Tanya and Rosie. Of course, there was an ensemble of talented young people who danced, sang, and acted that helped make this outstanding performance (which included our reason for being there Allie Lewis). The stage set was a testament to the hard work and talent of those in our community. When the curtains pulled back, there was a sense of wonder and awe across all the faces in the audience. My 13-year-old son looked at me and enthusiastically remarked “they built a real village!” Indeed, something real and amazing was created before us.

I’m sure these students will remember this performance for the rest of their lives because I know that I will. The DCHS 2024 performance of “Mamma Mia” inspired me not only to write this thank you letter but also to get more involved in participating and supporting art and theatre in our schools and community. Our community was reminded yet again how special the students all around Daviess County and Owensboro are and how lucky we are to have outstanding teachers like Jacob Hein to inspire our children to use their talents. It is in moments like these we can collectively celebrate what younger generations in our community are doing right.
