Apollo had four first-place finishers and is sending nine wrestlers to the state tournament after a successful final day at the Region 2 Tournament at Taylor County. Daviess County and Trinity each had four wrestlers advance, and Owensboro had three.

Of the 20 total local wrestlers who made the cut, five will only serve as alternates after fifth-place finishes. Apollo and Daviess County also each had one wrestler finish sixth, and Trinity had two.

The top four finishers in each weight class receive automatic bids to the 2019 State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 15-16 at Alltech Arena inside the Kentucky Horse Park.

First-place finishers for Apollo included Joseph Morgan, Preston Mattingly, Jake Insko and Jack Fuller. Samuel Ramirez and Cameron Baker took second, Travis Roby third and Cade Crume fourth in their respective divisions for the Eagles. Cameron Baker is an alternate at fifth, and Cameron Devine just missed the cut with a sixth-place finish.

Trinity’s Blaise Morris, Caleb Mills and Briar Roberts all finished third. Matthew Mills took fifth, while Trey Williams and Deven Wathen were both sixth.

Daviess County had a trio of fourth-place finishers in Landen Boone, Conner Tolson and Say Moe. Joseph Geralds got fifth, and Skyler Walker took sixth.

Jordan Neal got the only automatic bid with a fourth-place finish for Owensboro, though Andres Quintana and Kadyn Davidson both earned alternate spots with fifth place.

As a team, Apollo finished third with 209.0 points. Despite having two less wrestlers than each of the top two teams, the Eagles were only slightly edged by LaRue County (215.0) and Meade County (211.5).

Trinity — competing with only seven wrestlers — finished eighth, Daviess County took ninth, and Owensboro was 11th.
