Tayonna Greer came through time after time and finished with 26 points to help the Owensboro girls’ basketball team get past Trinity 62-58 at home Saturday.

Nina Wathen finished with 18 points for the Lady Raiders and helped them get off to a quick start, and in doing so crossed the 2,000-point benchmark for her career.

Owensboro (11-14) had to fight back from a couple of big deficits, the first coming when Josie Aull hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to give the Lady Raiders (8-14) an 18-10 lead. Aull finished with five 3-pointers and a team-high 20 points.

Greer gave the Lady Devils their first lead of the game on a fast break layup, and they used a late run to take a 26-25 advantage at the half.

Trinity came back out strong and threatened to pull away, but Owensboro again responded. A steal at one end led to a layup at the other as Greer cut the Lady Raiders’ lead to 45-44 heading into the final frame.

Owensboro head coach Jansen Locher said the team had to refocus to make their run and get back in contention.

“We finally came up with some rebounds and got some defensive pressure,” he said. “There were too many times we were out of our offensive sync. Once we started taking it to the basket our confidence went up a little bit.”

Greer added 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws with 5.4 seconds to play that sealed the win. Locher said she got in a rhythm early and stayed calm throughout the game.

“She didn’t force any 3-pointers,” Locher said. “She started the game taking it to the basket and in the second half started hitting the offensive glass. She understands that her time right now as a senior is limited with how many games she has left. She’s starting to take advantage of it a little bit more.”

Down 2 points with 2:20 to go, Owensboro ran a lot of clock and got a couple of scores to take the lead before Greer won the game at the line. The Lady Devils are no strangers to tight games this year, but they’ve come out the wrong side more often than not.

“We’ve been on the losing end of them, so it feels good to be on the winning side,” Locher said. “We’ve fouled at the end of games and lost, so we didn’t want to put ourselves in that position.”

Amaya Curry finished with 14 points for Owensboro, and Mykael Winstead added 13. For Trinity, Cassidy Morris his 13 free throws and had 15 points.
