In their first appearance in 15 years at the 3rd Region Tournament, the Trinity girls’ basketball team came out strong and hung close with Breckinridge County through the first half. Ultimately, though, the depth of the Lady Tigers was too much, and the Lady Raiders’ season came to an end with a 59-42 loss in the first round on Wednesday.

Trinity (12-19) took their only lead at 7-6 after a pair of buckets by Jose Aull midway through the first quarter. Breckinridge County (21-9) responded at the other end and held a 12-9 lead heading into the second frame.

The Lady Tigers twice stretched their lead to 10 points, and a late bucket left them with a 27-20 advantage at the half. Trinity head coach John Cummings said he was happy with the effort against one of the top teams in the field.

“I thought the start was great,” he said. “The first half we felt ok by being down 7. I think you just have to give Breck a lot of credit. Their depth bothered us. We knew that we had to score, but they did a really good job defending us.”

The Lady Raiders weren’t able to make up any ground in the second half as the Lady Tigers slowly pulled away over the final two quarters.

Cassidy Morris ended with a team-high 12 points, and Aull added 10.

Though their run in the region tournament ended early, Cummings said it was a great accomplishment to make it out of the district. On a team full of underclassmen, he said it’s a building block for the future.

“Our girls played really well after Christmas,” Cummings said. “It was up and down at times, but we knew we would be because we’re so young. Just getting here was a huge accomplishment for our girls. The experience is priceless.”
