A 30-point third quarter and 27 total points from Darrion Wimsatt led the Owensboro boys’ basketball team to an impressive 80-43 victory over Apollo on Friday night.

The Red Devils (15-7, 5-0) stretched their win streak to four and remained perfect in 3rd Region games. The Eagles (3-20, 0-5) came out hot and led the entire first quarter but couldn’t keep up the rest of the night.

After both teams picked up meaningful wins earlier in the week, Owensboro head coach Rod Drake said his team could have easily let their guard down against an Apollo team that’s played well in recent weeks.

“We had to come out ready to play,” Drake said. “This was a trap game for us. They won a big game on Tuesday night, and so did we. We could have very well come out here and went through the motions. We played hard.”

Cameron Frantz hit his first of four 3-pointers early for the Eagles, who used hot shooting to take a 17-16 lead after one quarter. Wimsatt then sparked a quick Red Devils run that put them up 23-17, and the lead held steady for a 33-29 advantage at the half.

After the break, Owensboro turned up the pressure. Wimsatt scored 10 points and six others got on the board, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Dante Greer.

“I thought we put it together in the second half,” Drake said. “It was a total team effort. We shared the ball well the third quarter. The ball didn’t stick (with one guy). Several guys scored for us.”

Wimsatt had another strong scoring performance, but Drake said his ability to get the rest of the team going has really been shining through lately.

“Over the last six or seven games, he’s made his teammates better,” Drake said. “They’re playing off of him and running the floor with him. He’s finally realizing if he can get them going, he’s going to get his.”

Greer finished with 12 points and Amari Wales had 9. Frantz led with 12 points for Apollo, with Harrison Bowman scoring 9.
