Apollo 12, Middlesboro 3

The Eagles (5-5) got a pair of wins in the final day of the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., to finish the tournament 3-1.

Against Middlesboro to start the day, Apollo collected 11 hits that included six doubles and a triple. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Eagles tied the game in the second and kept adding to their lead, finishing with three runs in the sixth frame and five in the seventh.

Offensive leaders were Trevor Payne (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, double), Demetrio Ortiz (2-for-2, 2 RBIs, triple), Max Holder (2-for-3, run, RBI, double), Jakob Helms (3 runs, double) and Dan St. Claire (2 runs, 2 RBIs, double). Winning pitcher Harrison Bowman went five innings.

Against Lawrence County, the Eagles were outhit 7-4 and had two errors but still did not allow a run to score. Winning pitcher Josh Maddox went six innings and struck out seven, while Nick Judd closed out the final frame to complete the shutout.

All three runs for Apollo came in the sixth inning. Maddox drove in Evan Hodskins and Holder with a double, and Trevor Lawrence singled to plate Noah Stewart.

Owensboro 12, Nelson County 9
Braxton French went 3-for-3 with a homer and a double, and the Red Devils (6-4) picked up their first win of the Fort Walton Beach Bash, using three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for good. After plating one in the first inning, Owensboro scored five in the second and three in the fourth to counter a pair of four-run innings by Nelson County.

French finished with four runs and two RBIs. Nick Belcher (3-for-4, 2 runs, 4 RBIs) had a pair of triples and a double, while Tucker Hagan (2 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) doubled twice. Brennon Williams (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Andrew Chancellor also doubled.

Trace Grenier picked up the win in two innings of work. Four different pitchers saw action and combined to strike out nine.

North Forsyth (Ga.) 11, Trinity 1 (6 innings)
The Raiders (3-7) weren’t able to get much going offensively, and North Forsyth slowly pulled away in the Adidas Beach Blast in Pensacola, Fla.

The lone run for Trinity came in the third inning when Briar Roberts doubled to drive in Landon Huff. Kevin Foster recorded two hits and Owen Payne had one.

Payne took the loss on the mound but did not give up a hit in 2.1 innings of work.

SOFTBALL RECAPS
Apollo 19, Oldham County 5
The E-Gals (5-4) used 22 hits to make easy work of Oldham County in the third day of the Hit the Beach Classic in Panama City, Fla. Apollo got a home run from Hallie Wilson, a triple from Mattie Lyons and six total doubles.

Leading the offensive showcase were Lyons (5-for-6, 3 runs, 5 RBIs), Lauren Whitehouse (4-for-4, run, 2 RBIs), Brooke Brown (3-for-6, 3 runs, RBI), Wilson (3-for-6, 2 runs, 5 RBIs) and Madison Shemwell (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs).

Lyons picked up the win, giving up three runs on five hits through four innings.

Owensboro Catholic 14, Pace (Fla.) 3
Hadley Phelps hit a grand slam and Danielle Henning also homered as the Lady Aces (4-4) rolled to a win in the third day of a spring break tournament in Florida.

Phelps got the win in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits. Lexi Hatchett closed out the game, giving up one run on four hits.

Phelps led with four RBIs and Danielle Henning added three RBIs and three runs. Camille Conkright, Isabella Henning, Phelps and Taylor Dukate each scored twice.

Trinity 13, Gulf Breeze (Fla.) 8 (5 innings)
The Lady Raiders (2-10) overcame four errors and used 15 hits to get a victory in a five-inning game in a spring break tournament in Florida. Tied 1-1 after three, Trinity scored five runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth. Gulf Breeze responded with seven in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough.

Savannah Aull went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the offense. Others with a big day at the plate were Cassidy Morris (2-for-3, run, 3 RBI, double) and Avery Barnett (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI). Abby Payne and Lexi Edge each scored twice, while Brittany Booker and Josie Aull each drove in a pair of runs.

Katherine Hibbitt got the win, pitching the complete game while giving up eight runs (six unearned) on five hits and striking out six.
