The Owensboro Catholic tennis team won almost every one of its matches, while a handful of players from Apollo, Owensboro and Daviess County are still in the mix after day one of the 3rd Region tournament at Moreland Park.
For the Lady Aces, No. 1 Sarah Kate Young and No. 5 Emmy Moore each handily won their matches after earning first-round byes. The team also got dominant doubles victories from No. 1 Sarah Englert/Ashley Fulkerson and No. 2 Alyssa Gatten/Olivia Hayden in the second round.
Englert/Fulkerson knocked out Daviess County’s Ashton Payne/Reagan Watkins, who picked up a win in the first round.
For the Catholic boys, No. 5 Nick Boarman and Brett Condor each cruised to victories in round two action, while the doubles team of Will Danzer/Davis Brocato also picked up a win. Boarman beat Daviess County’s Graham Sandefur, Condor knocked out Owensboro’s Mitchell Douglas, and Danzer/Brocato edged past DC’s Camden Clark/Ryota Takahashi.
The Owensboro boys’ team got an easy win from No. 1 seed Dylan Mather, while both doubles teams are also advancing to day two. No. 3 Paul Iracane/Will Clark won in the second round after a bye, while the duo of AJ Iracane/Grayson McFarland squeaked out two wins to stay alive.
The OHS doubles teams knocked out Apollo’s Chris Cox/Thomas Ashby and Ryan Ash/ Michael Chapman, respectively.
The Lady Devils got a win from Paige Castlen/Emma Embry in the first round before the duo lost to the No. 5 seed in their second match.
Apollo’s girls will be back in action in round three after both doubles teams earned victories. No. 3 Caitlyn Blandford/Madalyn Hyland cruised to a victory after a first-round bye. Lauren Clements/Lynzy Schwartz picked up an easy win in round one before earning a narrow victory in the final match of the night.
The Daviess County boys’ got a solid win from No. 3 George Hulse, who took down Apollo’s Stephen Austin in the second round. The DCHS duo of No. 2 Chris Salamah/Dylan McDuffee had a bye before easing to a second-round victory.
