The Owensboro Catholic boys’ track and field team had their best showing in more than 28 years, taking second place in Thursday’s state track meet. While the girls didn’t finish on the podium in the overall standings, the 4×100 Meter Relay team brought home a state championship in their event.

The Lady Aces’ team of Maggie Hayden, Mallary Bailey, Emilee Cecil and Genarose Jones provided the highlight of the day, finishing the 4×100 in 50.13 seconds for the only first-place finish for Catholic.

While the girls placed seventh overall, they were only 11.5 points away from the top female team.

The boys’ team, though, had a handful of podium performances in both field and running events to finished second behind state champion St. Henry District.

Boys’ head coach Scott Lowe said they were hoping for a trophy and he knew if everyone performed the way he knew they could, they were going to have a top finish.

Austin Stallings provided the most help, earning two second-place medals to go with one third-place finish — all in distance events.

“With our strength being in sprints, distance and throwing, we figured we could do something special if everything fell into place,” he said. “Everybody did what they were supposed to do and it turned out the best it could. There are no regrets, we were successful.”

While the team struggled with injuries throughout the season, Lowe said they knew they had potential if they could stay healthy.

And even though both teams are losing some athletes to graduation, Lowe said he is excited about the younger competitors coming up through the ranks.

“They have to look at what these older guys did and say some day I aspire to do what they are doing,” he said. “They need to look at all the hours and days it took to achieve their goals, build on that and keep moving forward.”
