Fifty years after they won a state title, members of Owensboro High School’s 1969 championship baseball team are being honored for their incredible season.

A handful of players from that team are making the trip back home and will be recognized prior to the Red Devils’ final home game, set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Shifley Park.

The 1969 team capped off a 29-11 season with a perfect run through the postseason — they went 8-0 and allowed a total of five runs while earning four shutouts. Following district and region title wins, the Red Devils got past LaRue County 1-0 and Jessamine County 7-1 in the first two rounds of state.

Owensboro then took down three-time defending state champ Ashland Blazer 1-0 to win the title behind the arm of pitcher Bernie Strawn, who also picked up the victory over LaRue County.

Strawn, Barry Gaddis and Mike Strehl all garnered All-State honors that season. All three plan to be in attendance.

All those planning to attend the ceremony are:
Tommy Brown
Terry Gabbert
Barry Gaddis
Jerry Price
Greg Hartsough
Terry Baird
Bernie Strawn
Mike Strehl
Bruce Coomes
David Smith
Tom Meredith (assistant coach)

The remaining roster from the 1969 team are:
David Wellman
Tom Snedeker
Larry Cox
Mike Sturgeon (deceased)
Benny Davis
David Shafferman
David Neal
Carl Watson (manager)
Jack Hicks (head coach, deceased)
