While Owensboro ran away with first place in the boys’ competition, the Daviess County girls edged past a couple of contenders for the top spot in Tuesday’s Class AAA Region 1 track and field championships.
The Owensboro boys dominated their meet, beating out second place Hopkinsville by 30 points. Apollo took fourth, and Daviess County finished 10th.
The Daviess County girls beat out Marshall County by nine points to earn their region championship. Owensboro’s girls placed seventh, while Apollo finished ninth.
Between relays and individual events, the OHS boys’ team qualified for the state meet in nine events. Imonte Owsley led the effort and qualified in the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes and the Long Jump. The 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 Meter Relay teams are all also moving on.
Apollo’s Justin Sandefur will compete at state in the 110 and 300 Meter Hurdles.
The DC girls qualified for state in 11 events, including the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 Meter Relays. Kyran Rowan will compete in the 200 and 400 Meter Dashes, while Karlee Hoffman will participate in the 1600 and 3200 Meter Runs.
Apollo’s Amari Sanders took first in Shot Put to advance to the state meet.
All other individuals must await the results from across the state to see if they advance in their respective events as at-large qualifiers.
