RiverDawgs dominant in pair of weekend games

After giving up a late lead in their season-opening loss, the Owensboro RiverDawgs’ baseball team closed out the weekend with a pair of dominant wins to wrap up a three-game homestand.

Owensboro (2-1) kicked off their 2019 campaign Friday night at home, falling 11-9 in a back-and-forth battle with the Henderson Flash. The RiverDawgs bounced back Saturday in a 12-2 eight inning win over the Franklin Duelers. In a rematch with the Flash on Sunday, Owensboro dominated in a 13-3 seven-inning victory.

The RiverDawgs will have Monday off before playing their first game on the road Tuesday when they face the Muhlenberg County Stallions. They’ll travel again Wednesday to take on the Madisonville Miners, then return home Thursday to host the Fulton Railroaders.


Friday — Henderson 11, Owensboro 9
Both teams scored in bunches throughout the night, but the Flash used a three-run eighth inning to go in front for good. Ian Ellis led the RiverDawgs’ offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Kyle Hogwood added a pair of hits, while Tanner Singleton and Kirk Liebert drove in two runs.

Saturday — Owensboro 12, Franklin 2 (8 innings)
The RiverDawgs scored four runs in the second inning for an early lead and pulled away with four more in the seventh. Brenden Bube picked up the win in 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

Hogwood led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs. Liebert and Bailey Falkenstein each added three hits, while Jacob White and Parker Stahlman added two a piece. Stahlman drove in a pair and scored twice, and White had two runs.

Sunday — Owensboro 13, Henderson 3 (7 innings)
Ellis went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, finishing with four RBIs and a pair of runs to lead the RiverDawgs to another big win. Falkenstein also had another big day on offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run.

Winning pitcher Holden Martin came in to throw 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Caleb Dubois earned the save in .2 innings of work.
