After sweeping a doubleheader at home against the Dubois County Bombers on Saturday, the Owensboro RiverDawgs are a win away from 300 regular season franchise victories. They can hit the mark Monday night win they face the Franklin Duelers.
Owensboro (13-6) also moves within half of game of first place in the Ohio Valley League overall standings as they near the midway point of the 2019 season. The RiverDawgs’ lead in the East Division grew to 3.5 games over second-place Dubois County (9-9).
With Saturday’s doubleheader scheduled as a pair of seven-inning games, Owensboro needed extra innings to win game one 8-7 before picking up an easy 11-3 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Josh Bennett homered in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the contest at 5-5. Dubois County scored in the top of the eighth, but a two-out single by Ian Ellis drove in an Owensboro run to tie the game again.
After another Bombers’ run in the top of the ninth, Ian Ellis led off the bottom half with a solo homer and Brady Higdon drove in the winning run a few batters later.
Bo Robinson picked up the win in three innings of action. He and starter Brenden Bube combined for eight strikeouts.
In game two, Owensboro took an early lead and pulled away with a five-run sixth inning. Ellis went four innings and struck out nine in the pitching victory, while Holden Martin earned the save.
