Teams from across Western Kentucky will begin competition today in the 19th Annual Apollo Summer Slam, one of the premiere early-season volleyball tournaments in the area.

The two-day tournament begins at 6 p.m. and features all five local squads — Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic and Trinity — among a 24-team field.

Each team is guaranteed five matches. The tournament starts with round robin pool play, with teams divided into eight groups of three.

Teams that finish first in their pool advance to the Gold Division Playoff, while second- and third-place finishers will move on to the Silver Division and Bronze Division, respectively.

Saturday’s playoffs are single-elimination in terms of advancing to the championship, though there is a consolation bracket in order to determine placement for all 24 squads.

Matches during pool play will take place at Apollo High School, the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, Burns Middle School and Owensboro High School. All Gold Division matches will be at Apollo, all Silver Division matches will be at Cliff Hagan, and Bronze Division matches are divided between Apollo and Burns.
