The Apollo boys claimed first place as a team Saturday in the Owensboro Invitational cross country meet at Yellow Creek Park, while Owensboro Catholic’s John Cason led the pack for individual honors.

Aside from Cason’s top time of 16:36.36, three Apollo runners and one from Owensboro finished in the top 10 in a dominant showing by local athletes. OHS took sixth place and Catholic finished eighth.

The Eagles took first place for the second time this season after defeating Bowling Green by 22 points. Freshman Thomas Ashby led the team with a second-place finish (16:48.63) followed by Blake Rigdon (3rd, 17:00.45). Rounding out the Eagles top five were Nicholas Szemethy (10th, 17:41.39), Ethan Dych (11th, 17:41.70) and Ryan Payne (21st, 18:19.94).

Michael Ashley placed ninth (17:27.47) for Owensboro.

Cason said he thought his race went pretty well for it only being his second meet of the year.

“I’m fairly happy with my time,” Cason said. “I want to keep building for the rest of the season. I wanted to see how I ran and how I felt these first couple races and then build on that.”

Eagles head coach Charlie Shoulta said the team ran really well up front.

“Our goal today was to try and get as many guys as possible under 17 minutes,” he said. “We knew it would be a fast course and good weather, so that was our goal going in. We did well. We got the win that’s the most important thing.”

In the girl’s race, OCHS senior Katie Hayden finished 9th.

Hayden said the team is really excited about the season and she thinks they have plenty of potential.

“We are working harder every day to keep getting better,” she said. “But I definitely think I had a good race today. I’m pretty happy with my place and my time.”
