AHS boys win Gatorland race; OHS, OCHS teams also compete

Led by a fifth-place finish from freshman Thomas Ashby, the Apollo boys edged out host Greenwood to win the Gatorland cross country race Saturday.

As a team, Apollo finished with 71 points to beat out Greenwood (92) and Meade County (98). Owensboro’s boys placed 13th and Owensboro Catholic took 20th.

Ashby finished with a time of 16:59.04 to pace the Eagles, whose other scoring runners were Ethan Dych (8th, 17:10.01), Blake Rigdon (13th, 17:29.04), Nicholas Szemethy (17th, 17:36.10) and Jake Alvey (28th, 17:53.00).

The Red Devils’ had two runners in the top 30, as Nathanael Turner took 16th (17:35.79) and Michael Ashley placed 29th (17:55.04).

The Aces were led by Ty Gatten with a time of 19:10.75.

In the girls’ race, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic each only fielded four runners competing as individuals. The Lady Aces’ top finisher was Katie Hayden (15th, 21.46.42), while the Lady Devils were led by Tasih Pettigrew (32nd, 22:41.73).
