Apollo sophomore Macey Brown has been named The Owensboro Times Girls’ Golf Player of the Year.

Apollo sophomore Macey Brown has been named The Owensboro Times Girls’ Golf Player of the Year.

Brown went through a swing change in the offseason, so she and Apollo head coach Jarrod Carter weren’t quite sure how the year would start after a strong finish and trip to the state tournament in 2018.

“My expectation this year was to shoot high 70s and low 80s, but that quickly changed early in the season,” Brown said. “I was consistently in the mid-to-high 70s, with a few even lower here and there.”

Carter said his top golfer exceeded all expectations with her accomplishments. With little exception, Brown was a top contender in every tournament she entered this year.

Brown won the city-county tournament with a 73, and she tied for first — finishing third after a playoff — in the Apollo Invitational. She also placed between second and fifth in nine of her other regular season tournaments.

Her 18-hole scoring average was 76, and Brown posted a career best 1-under par finish at the Marshall County Invitational.

“She is determined to be the best she can be,” Carter said. “She is easy to coach and she has an incredible work ethic. She put a lot of time in and hit a lot of balls this year to get things right.  She has a great support system from her parents. Her dad gave a lot of time to the process as well.”

Brown said the support from her father Kyle is one of the biggest factors in her continued improvement.

“Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she said. “He has been there since day one and is always supporting me whether it was a good day or a bad one. In the summer, it was just me and him. Our bond grew not only on the golf course, but personally as well. He will always be my No. 1 fan on and off the golf course.”

Brown is grateful for everything she’s already achieved, and with two more years to play at Apollo she’s hoping to keep adding to the list.

“This year showed that when I put my mind to something and then work hard for it, it pays off,” she said. “I would really like to win the regional title, be a member of the all-state team and be a contender at the state tournament.”

Carter said if Brown can keep up her consistency and stay focused, she has the potential to cross all three off her list.

“She had a few mishaps during the year but that’s golf,” Carter said. “Her entire year was a highlight to me. I am truly excited to see what she can do in the future. She is a phenomenal kid on and off the course, and I love coaching her. I think we are going to see big things in the future.”
