With only eight teams remaining in the football Class 5A state playoffs, here’s a quick look at this week’s matchups and what the remaining path to a championship looks like for Owensboro.

Since moving to Class 5A in 2015, the Red Devils have advanced to the quarterfinals four out of five seasons, but they have not yet made it to the semifinal round.

The semifinal games are scheduled to be played Nov. 29. The 5A championship is set for Dec. 7 at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field in Lexington.

If Owensboro beats Fairdale this week, there is still a slim chance of hosting a semifinal game, though they’d need some outside help. They’d need either Covington Catholic or Frederick Douglass — both undefeated — to lose.

Here’s a look at who’s left, this week’s games and potential semifinal opponents for Owensboro.

RPI ranking of remaining teams:
1. Covington Catholic
2. Frederick Douglass
3. Owensboro
4. South Oldham
5. Bowling Green
6. Fairdale
7. Southwestern
8. Madison Southern

This week’s games:
Owensboro vs. Fairdale
South Oldham vs. Bowling Green
Covington Catholic vs. Madison Southern
Frederick Douglass vs. Southwestern

Potential semifinal games for OHS:
1. If Covington Catholic and Frederick Douglass both win, Owensboro plays at Frederick Douglass.
2. If Covington Catholic or Frederick Douglass loses — but not both — Owensboro hosts the winner of South Oldham vs. Bowling Green.
3. If Covington Catholic and Frederick Douglass both lose, Owensboro hosts Madison Southern.
