The Trinity girls’ basketball team will have a new head coach this year as they try to make a return trip to the 3rd Region tournament.

The Lady Raiders went 12-19 last season, earning a berth in the region tournament for the first time in 15 years — when they were still members of the 11th District and were coached by Emily Hernandez.

It’s Hernandez who will be taking over as the head coach — she served a brief stint with Trinity in the early 2000s — after John Cummings stepped down during the offseason.

Hernandez, who is now the principal at Trinity, also spent eight seasons as the girls’ head coach at Owensboro, guiding the team to multiple region tournament appearances.

The Lady Raiders return several players from last year, but they’re still a team comprised almost entirely of underclassmen — they’ve only got one senior and no juniors.

One of the biggest challenges for the Lady Raiders this season will once again be their depth. Though they’ve got a strong core of players coming back, that group could have to stay on the court for the majority of each game.

Leading the way for Trinity this year will be sophomore Cassidy Morris, who averaged a double-double (18.4 ppg, 11 rpg) as a standout freshman.

Freshman Josie Aull (11.3 ppg) will reprise her role as the point guard, while senior Morgan Kinsey (10.4 rpg, 7.1 ppg) will be the top inside threat.

Other top returning players are sophomores Katherine Hibbitt and Hadley Hatfield.

Freshman Allie Graham will be a new face who could play a significant role and be a shooting threat.

Hernandez said she’s confident in her players and is glad to lead Trinity once again.

“We have some talented players returning,” she said. “They are a great group to work with and I look forward to a fun season.”
