Wesleyan football closes out season with win

The Kentucky Wesleyan football team ended their season on a high note Saturday, earning a meaningful 41-30 home victory over Alderson Broaddus at Steele Stadium.

It was the first win of the season for the Panthers (1-10), the first victory under head coach Craig Yeast and the first time KWC has ever beaten the Battlers.

The Panthers never trailed, and they got plenty of contribution on each side of the ball. While the offense racked up 468 total yards, the defense forced six turnovers (4 interceptions, 2 fumbles).

The teams’ ombined for three interceptions in the first quarter, the last of which Wesleyan’s Ramond Jackson picked returned 40 yards to put KWC inside the red zone. Austin Frasier then caught his first collegiate touchdown, a 6-yard pass from Mike McGee.

The Battlers connected on a field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3 after the first quarter.

Both teams added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Wesleyan’s came on a 47-yard catch by Chauncey Greer and a 37-yard run by Johnson.

The lone score of the third quarter came when Wesleyan’s Oscar Elliot scooped up a fumble and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown.

After the Battlers pulled back within three points, Johnson added two more touchdown runs — 6 yards and 1 yard, respectively — to put the game away.

Alderson Broaddus scored once more on a 5-yard pass on the final play of the game.

Johnson led the run game with 150 yards on 22 carries, while Greer led the receivers with 67 yards on six catches. Quarterback Wiley Cain finished with 168 yards on 16 completions.

Moe Carter paced the defense with seven tackles. Jalen Wilson, Tyreik Norwood, Dalan Cofer, Jalen Humphrey and RJ Wilson each recorded one sack.

Alijah McGhee had two interceptions, while Kendrick Curry and Ramond Jackson both recorded one.
